Sclerotherapy is a technique performed in the office to eliminate varicose and spider veins. Theresa Bren, nurse sclerotherapist, has joined Foxhall OB/GYN to provide this service. A tiny needle is used to inject a small amount of a sclerosing medication into your abnormal vessels. The medication produces a chemical inflammation within the lining of the vein wall. The vein collapses and the walls stick together to form a fibrotic cord. This fibrosed vein is absorbed by the body over a period of four to eight weeks. A typical course of evaluation, diagnostic tests, and treatment will cost several hundred dollars, and since these procedures are considered cosmetic, they are not covered by any medical insurance.
